It is extremely difficult to obtain finance via the traditional banking system for small companies in Costa Rica. Even though the government has set aside millions of US dollars for development funding, the bureaucracy imposed by the banking system is excessive. Possibly this is due to a lack of adequate follow-up to loans and therefore inability to detect economic problems with innovative projects before it is too late, so the rate of failure of the few projects funded may be rather high.
Fudesemillas would like to act as a go-between for the rural groups who need finance and international organisations such as Finca Costa Rica http://fincacostarica.org/index2.htm. Many rural groups are not aware that such international financing organisations exist. They are also unaware of what Fair Trade is or how to apply it to their needs. Our Foundation could play the role of go-between by informing the rural groups of these alternative ways of financing their projects.
